Rhetoric is something that at least everyone uses in his or her everyday life. Rhetoric can be used in the form of social media, politics and even making the decision on how you are going to communicate. In the Youtube video titled In Defense of Rhetoric: No Longer Just for Liars, Professor, Dr. Ann George states rhetoric as how we persuade each other or how we make arguments. George believes we can do this by the words we use, the gestures we make and the facial appeals that can break down the language and encourage the argument one might be making. As of today, my goals in life are very simple: graduate from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor In Science of Nursing (BSN), and find a job quickly out of college that will aid me in paying off my student loans. To do this, it involves many hours in the library, constant studying sessions and attending class every day. All these decisions are rhetorical, meaning that it is something I am used to doing. The example Dr. Tharon Howard uses in the video is a great example of grabbing on to what you are used to. He states that people searching for toothpaste aren’t going to go into detail about what is in the toothpaste or how it is beneficial, but instead the buyer is probably going to grab the toothpaste that they are used to and have always used and avoid the details. Howard also continued to state why people choose the university they go to. He explains that people chose the school based off a systematic way of ranking the criteria. I can relate to this because I listed the pros and cons of why a nursing major can be beneficial and I stated why I would be good with this specific job field. And I will continue to use rhetoric as a way of listing the pros and cons of certain medicines and medical
