Statement Of Purpose To Teach For America

I can still remember coming home from school after an exciting day in the first grade. I would go straight to my room, line all of my dolls up in the floor, and “teach” them everything I had learned earlier that day. But of course, not every child who pretends to be a teacher in his or her early years actually becomes a teacher. So although I enjoyed “teaching,” I never really considered it as a choice for my life-long career.

I believe that education is the key in developing today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Education is the basis on which individuals develop their self-concept and the desire to become more knowledgeable. I want to become an educator because I am interested in helping elementary students become active learners and also to assist with their social skills. I believe I can make a difference to many students as they start their educational foundation. I feel that all teachers should possess the desire to devote their hard work and efforts to their students’ educational success. I view teaching as not only one of the most respected careers, but also as one in which the rewards are great and many

I seek to join Teach for America to give back to low income communities I have always had a passion to serve my community, rather if it was by volunteering at the local Boys and Girls Club, visiting the elderly, or lending a helping hand at Habitat for Humanity. If given the opportunity to join Teach for America I would be able to not only serve a local community but also teach the future leaders of America. I believe that a quality education should not be upon the basis of race or family income, but from the quality of the educator that comes in contact with each child. It is as if the quality of the teacher can somehow have an everlasting effect on the students that he or she comes in contact with. It is an endless cycle of an unmotivated and uncaring teacher’s coming into school districts and helping to further hinder the students. The

With this calling to be a teacher I want to attend Appalachian State University and gain my bachelors degree in education so I can teach and impact children in a positive way. I can contribute certain qualities to the Appalachian Community like my good leadership skills and being a good listener. I can help other students with their problems by listening to them and then use my discernment to lead them in a positive decision. I love the feeling of teaching someone in a way that they can teach others. I believe that when you feel confident in yourself it makes you feel special, and that is what I want to do for people. I want to lead people into feeling confident and letting them know that they are special, because once you know that you are worth so much, you can succeed in so many ways. The nature of students is that of an instinctive ability to learn. Students of ages and all grade levels reflect their surroundings and respond according to their interpretation. Naturally it is not only the influence of a classroom that shapes a student but many outside factors that determine students’ goals and abilities; for example, healthy encouragement from parents. Students may find a natural ability to perform in one area of education and with help may fine tune their ability to better their understanding of other areas. Students have a better understanding of education when it is relevant to their needs and everyday life.

Teach for America has benefited the field of education. Teach for America provides an education for children in low-income communities by recruiting a diverse group of members who desire to expand their educational opportunities. The program provides an intense training, support and career development to assist members in increasing their impact and deepen their understanding of what it takes to provide an excellent education for students. Teach for America has also produced members that now work at various levels of education, policy, and other professions, to ensure all children receive an excellent education (Teach for America, 2012).

At this point in my college career, I have reached the limit as to what the Miami-Dade Honors College can offer me. So far I have pursued an Associate in Arts degree in Biology and am looking forward to the next step in my education. My experiences here have allowed me to grow heavily both as a student and an individual, but I am limited in the amount of resources currently available to me. For example, I do not have the variety of courses and study abroad opportunities that four-year college students have. Hence, I have taken all the science and math courses towards my associates degree at Miami-Dade College, but I am left to explore other options to continue to advance my preparation for a career in the science field. I 'm currently serving as a 2013 Corps member for Teach For America. I joined teach for America because I believe in their mission that all students deserve an equal an excellent education. I also joined because they work with schools where students are growing up in poverty and low income communities; a resemblance of my past. You see, we become our worst critics and even the mir image of success vanishes when our thoughts become clouded with fantasies; imaginative thoughts of the impossible. Joining the HLLC Community will be a dream come through because it will give me the opportunity to achieve my dreams while pursuing my education. I would utilize the HLLC Community to address a social issue that I am very passionate about. I would like to be part of Teach for America due to my love and ethical responsibility to teaching students. I have an ethical responsibility to teach because of my in-depth knowledge of student development in the areas of physical, social/emotional, and cognitive domains of children. Another aspect of my ethical responsibility that verifies why I would like to be a part of Teach for America is that, like Teach for America, I believe that every student deserves an education that is developmentally appropriate and meets their individual needs. I would be working alongside professionals whose main focus is on the concept of equity for all. Every student has the right to education no matter their race, gender, or economic background. TFA aims at bringing equality in the American education system. I want to join TFA because I have the passion for kids. I personally believe that I share a common ambition with TFA, and being a part of TFA family is a major opportunity for career development . This is because I am a person who advocates for equality among kids irrespective of their race, tribe, sex and their religious background. Therefore, joining TFA will create a major opportunity for me to meet my dream of helping kids achieve their goals in life.

As an educational leader, I must have a vision and mission statement for the school that is known by the staff, students, and parents. The vision will address the needs of the students academically, emotionally, and socially. According to DuFour (1998), “ Those who seek to transform their school into a professional learning community as characterized by an environment fostering mutual cooperation, emotional support, personal growth, and a synergy of efforts.” The leader must implement a plan that will cultivate the success of all students. The mission will speak to the direction of the school community stating what the desire goals are. The building leader will lead by example. High expectations will be communicated and encourage by staff and students. The educational leader of a school must develop a culture of team work to create a climate that is student friendly. The vision mission and goals of the leader should be transparent. The establishment of common goals is the first step. Without common goals, sustainable progress will be impossible and thus everyone will have lower expectations. The students, parents, and staff should be commented to the goals of every child reaching their full academic potential. The school environment should speak to goal setting and high expectations for all students and staff.

I have chosen to go into this field because I want to be one of those early childhood teacher that get children ready for important part of life. Having little cousins to watch growing up as well my own children and see them grow in their early education has shown me that I want to be part of that. I love the thought of being the first person to get the children started with their education by helping them along the way with fun filled classroom activities and games.

There are many reasons why I want to be a teacher. Starting with the most important, I want to influence children positively with Christian perspectives that will help them achieve satisfaction in their life.
