Reflection
While reading “The Challenge of Content-Area Reading: A Conversation with Donna Ogle”, I noted several instances that I found interesting, agreed, disagreed, and questioned. Initially, I enjoyed the commentary about how today’s technology is making contemporary classrooms richer learning environments. Being a highly involved individual in technology myself, I whole-heartedly believe that in the right hands or under instruction, technology can make the learning process a more fluent process. For example, when I have had issues with a particular topic or subject matter, I will find videos online, diagrams, and many other technological tools to help. The use of technology in the classroom is an important tool to utilize as an educator. Technology allows for educators to have instant access to a plethora of resources that would not be available if technology was not used in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to plan lessons, create presentations, and have interactive games for students to use as a learning tool through the use of different digital devices. Modern day technology is rapidly advancing and providing teacher with many different tools to use in the classroom to enhance the students learning experience.
Technology of the past 20 years has become a focal point of teaching and learning. As a teacher, it is my job to facilitate the learning for an individual by creating an environment that not only conducive for learning, but also places the child in a position to discover and learn them for themselves. Technology has given teachers to opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom, and has begun to reshape their role in the learning process.
Technology in the classroom is important for teachers, parents, and students alike, because technology use has become a necessary skill for survival in today’s vastly expanding technology driven global economy. Research has shown an increase in student’s success rates when exposed to technology in the classroom. Also technology has opened lines of communication between educators and parents to keep students on track, and help teachers educate better.
Education is a constantly changing aspect of every individual’s life, and it will never stop transforming. The format that a student learns has drastically changed over time, and continues to morph every year with new standards and new technology. The idea of utilizing technology in the classroom is a controversial one for many reasons. Some argue that it is too costly and ineffective to justify. Throughout history, technology has impacted society and its people. Technology is an invention that facilitates the means to achieve an objective. The book “Smarter Than You Think”, written by Clive Thompson argues how technology is changing our lives for the better. In Chapter 7 of his book, Thompson discusses the use of technology in classrooms and how they impact learning. Technology can enhance education by providing easy access to information, blended learning, and personalized education.
This article was in support of implementing technology into our school classrooms. It states that educational technology is pertinent to providing our kids with the skills that they will need to be successful in the twenty-first Century.

Reading is a basic skill that students develop and improve throughout their whole life. There will always be room to improve a person’s reading skills; whether they be nine or ninety, one’s brain will always be building and making new connections and like Jonathan Seagull, one should strive to improve.
Although having technology in a classroom is changing how the children learn in the classroom because technology teaches the brain to read in a different way than if a teacher would teach a student how to read a book.

The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been utterly momentous. Educators have now seen firsthand the numerous benefits of technology in the classroom. According to a study by IT Trade Association CompTIA, around 75 percent of educators have come to the conclusion that technology has a positive impact on the education process. Educators have also recognized the significance of developing these technological skills in students so they will be prepared to enter the workforce after they graduate (Cox). The goal for our students is to make meaning of what they are reading across the curriculum and in all content areas. We want them to read text effectively and with ease using strategies that are student centered. We need to teach our students to think while they are reading to strengthen their comprehension skills (Farr & Conner, 2017). We can do this by insuring students have a strong background in basic skills (Pressley, 2017). These skills are decoding, vocabulary building, word knowledge, and active comprehension strategies (Pressley, 2017). Monitoring their comprehension will also allow for future growth (Pressley, 2017). Students cannot understand the words in a text if they cannot read the words (Farr & Conner, 2017).
Across the U.S., technology used in education has been increasing exponentially. Every learning institution ranging from elementary school to college have incorporated technology into their teachings. Online textbooks, quizzes, notes, and classes are all examples of how education has been utilizing technology. While technology has a place in education, not everything in education needs to involve technology.

The constant distractions of everyday life that make reading a difficult challenge are exploited in David L. Ulin’s article- The Lost Art of Reading. People are often too involved with daily activities such as checking their latest notification, browsing the internet, or playing apps on their phones to gain the focus required to interact with well composed literature. Although Ulin expresses the difficulty to read in today’s world, he is not correct on everything. The distractions are only temporary, and can be avoided through certain actions, yet these actions are not included in the article.
