Why I Chose Early Childhood Education

I believe that education is the key in developing today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Education is the basis on which individuals develop their self-concept and the desire to become more knowledgeable. I want to become an educator because I am interested in helping elementary students become active learners and also to assist with their social skills. I am a student at the Illustrious Clark Atlanta University. In the fall, I will begin the second year of my matriculation at this institution. I am an Early Childhood Education major and Spanish minor. My educational aspirations begin by acquiring my bachelor degree. Furthermore, I will continue my education to obtain a master degree in business. I am also very assertive that I will accomplish my long-term educational goal of obtaining my doctoral degree in foreign policy. My vision is to begin my journey by being an educator to the underserved population. By teaching directly after college it will not only allow me to gain experience, but also gain knowledge, support, and mold me into a great 21st century educator. While I educate our youth, I will simultaneously be working to earn my master degree.

I want to become someone who teaches, an educator, a role model, a teacher. I want to help children in their early childhood education. I want to become a teacher because teachers play a very big role in children’s lives. Not only do they serve as educators, but for many kids, the classroom is where they feel the safest. They feel welcomed and at home. For these certain kids it is their one place of stability where they are always guaranteed to be loved and get fed and to have fun. I enjoy watching kids grow and helping them develop their learning skills. Every kid needs a good education and I want to be the one giving them that good education. I want to make a difference in their lives and prepare them for the road ahead.

(a) I went to Community College of Philadelphia to obtain my Associate’s Degree in Applied Science of Early Education. I further my education at Chestnut Hill College; with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science of Human Services, minor psychology. I knew I did not want to stop my education; however I did not want to obtain a degree in the same field. With that in mind, I applied to Bloomsburg University MBA fast-track program. I will be graduating in August of 2017. (b) I am currently an Academy Director for a childcare center in the urban neighborhoods. A year is shortly approaching for me to be the Academy Director at the center; however, I been with the company for over seven years. Within the company I have been promoted many times to higher positions. In addition, I work as an Adult for Daily Living at a Drug and Alcohol place in the Suburban Area.

Knowledge is a very powerful thing, and to be able to deliver this to today’s youth has been a dream of mine for a long time. There are many advantages to teaching. I feel that is a very fulfilling profession. I have seen my sister in the classroom, and it greatly inspired me to want to make a difference in some ones life. Through watching my sister in action I was inspired to follow in her footsteps.

Early childhood education has not always been the top priority in the education world. Although, research has proved that it should be the top priority as the benefits of Early Childhood Education are innumerous. Extensive neuroscience research has discovered that the brain is build over time and it is built from the bottom up. Early childhood experiences directly affect the quality brain development. Establishing a sturdy foundation through a high quality early childhood education experience, will dramatically develop child's brain. As a result, they will have a brighter future. In this essay, I will propose a plan for the children of 2020 and how to ensure the best early childhood education experience. I personally believe that racially, culturally, linguistically and developmentally responsive practices parental involvement are critical to the sturdy foundation that is essential to the positive early childhood experience.

While there are still many people who do not believe in the pivotal role that early childhood education plays in the psychosocial, cognitive development of children at the ages of three to five in particular, such benefits are well documented and illustrated by several psychoanalysts, leaving very little space for doubt. Perhaps one of the earliest most cited works is that of the Swiss psychologist and developmental biologist Jean Piaget (1896-1980). Based on his observations of how children make sense of the world around them, Piaget developed a four-stage model explaining how the mind processes new information encountered during cognitive development, which includes the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational stages. He posited that all children progress through these four stages in the same order beginning at infancy. While Piaget’s work on cognitive development and constructivist learning theory is widely cited in the field of education and is even the basis upon which many preschool programs are modeled, the German psychoanalyst, Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development garnered similar attention as it further illustrated the psychosocial development stages and classified them in eight distinctive categories, ranging from birth to the end of life. Building relationships with families and communities is an important part of early childhood education because it aims to incorporate everyone that is involved in young children’s lives. Families should be an integral part of the classroom. A child’s family is the most important thing in their lives and their first teachers. In early childhood settings families, should feel welcomed and comfortable. This means welcoming them into the classroom to spend time, share their interests, join in celebrations and field trips.

An ELC assists families by offering support and caring for children due to work commitments, lifestyle and family needs. Situated off Ranford road, and near a local primary school, Goodstart Early Learning Canning Vale- Campbell road (GELCVCR) offers care for children aged six weeks to five years, who live within this vicinity. According to Idcommunity (2016) records showed that in 2016 63% of people worked full time and 36% worked part-time out of the 11,089 residences that live within the Canning Vale area. With such a high number of residences working in the area Goodstart Campbell road helps provide care to families who require assistance. According to Baxter (2015, p. 2) early childhood education holds a key place in local communities as it helps provides opportunities for families to engage in the labour market. GELCVCR allows families this opportunity.
