Concept explainers
Much of the research on common cold prevention and treatment is performed by scientists employed or funded by drug companies. Often these companies do not allow scientists to publish the results of their research for fear that competitors at other drug companies will use this research to develop a new drug before they do. Should our society allow scientific research to be owned and controlled by private companies?

- Do you think the way this issue was handled should be a model for future situations involving potential dangers that might arise from research methods or results?arrow_forwardAs research techniques and technologies change, new ethical questions arise about whether the benefits of these techniques and procedures justify their use. Which technologies do you consider are current threats to ethical behavior in science and threaten to exploit research subjects?arrow_forwardWho has a better incentive to work long hours in a laboratory researching new cures for diseases: a scientist who earns a percentage of the profits from any new medicine she might invent, or a scientist who will get a handshake and a thank you note from her boss if she invents a new medicine?arrow_forward
- Answer the following question by respecting the order, and put the reference at end of the answer. Should we conduct clinical trials on humans at all? Who should participate and is it truly possible to obtain informed consent? Should people with deadly diseases facing certain deaths have to wait for a clinical trial to test the efficacy of the drug if it shows to be promising in a lab? Would you consider this to be denying someone a treatment that "can't hurt" but can only help?arrow_forwardYour roommate is writing a paper on the subject of cocaine and birth defects in humans and wonders why there don’t seem to be published reports of controlled experiments in humans on the subject; all the studies are on rats! - In double-blind studies neither the test subject or the researcher knows who was given the drug and who was given the control. Why are these studies effective for testing a drug that may elevate mood and relieve feelings of depression? Since there are two symptoms that are affected, a double-blind study is required. Double-blind studies are ways to ensure that only the researcher can figure out who is getting the effective drug. Double-blind studies are the most economical way to gather results from testing on humans. The patients and researchers are not given this information so they cannot be influenced in reporting the effectiveness.arrow_forward"Uses of NMR in new drug discoveries" Briefly explain this statement? Please answer at your own easy words.
