Interpretation: Metal oxide reacts with water to produce metal hydroxide. The additional information needed to determine the percent yield needs to be determined.
Concept Introduction: Percent yield is the efficiency of a
Explanation of Solution
A lot of information is to be needed to determine the percent yield.
Firstly, the information about the nature and name of metal oxide is required. This is required to write a balanced chemical equation.
Then theoretical yield is to be determined using steps written below:
Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product formed by the completion of the reaction in ideal condition. No amount of reactant remains unreacted.
To determine this theoretical yield following steps are followed:
- Write the balanced chemical equation and identified the known and unknown amount of given reactants.
- Use molar mass to convert given mass of reactant to moles.
- Use a mole ratio to convert moles of reactant into moles of product.
- Then covert the moles of product to mass by using molar mass. This is the theoretical yield.
After that actual yield is to be determined
The actual yield is the yield obtained after completion of the reaction. It is determined experimentally. After completion of the reaction, the product is isolated and dried carefully, then the isolated product is weighed. This is the actual yield of product
Then find out percent yield using the relation:
