Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
Electron-dot structure for given molecule which shows lone pairs has to be drawn and multiple bonds has to be identified.
Concept introduction:
Electron-dot structure:
This is only way to show the sharing of electrons between atom in polar covalent bonds or covalent bond. This is often called Lewis structure. This structure denotes valence electrons of an atom by dots and also it shows the way of valence electron distributed within a molecule.

General Chemistry: Atoms First
- Two Lewis structures can be written for nitrosyl fluoride, which contains one nitrogen, one oxygen, and one fluorine atom per molecule. Write the two Lewis structures land assign a formal charge to each atom.arrow_forwardMolecular Shape:trigonal planar Questions: (Complete sentences are not necessary) 1 Examine the Lewis structure for each of the molecular shapes formed above. (ignore BrF!) Complete the following table based upon both the number of unshared electron pairs around the central atom and also the number of bond groups that are around the central atom. For example. in the following Lewis structure of PBr,, phosphonus (the central atom) has one pair of unshared electrons and three bond ypoups surrounding it. :Br: Br (Note: single, double, and triple bonds all count as single bond groups) Number of Bond Groups Number of Unshared Electron Pairs Around the Central Atom Molecular Shape Around Central Atom Linear Bent Trigonal Planar Trigonal Pyramidal Tetrahedral 2. What is the electrostatic charge of all electron groups. either shared (Le. bonds) or unshared? Since all electron groups have this same charge. do they attract or repel each other?arrow_forwardWhich of the following molecules contains at least one atom that has an expanded (hypervalent) octet?arrow_forward
- How many VSEPR electron groups are there for the C, the central atom in this Lewis structure H-C≡N: ?arrow_forward3) The molecule diphosphorus tetraoxide (P,O,) has two central atoms and four different resonance structures that do not violate the octet rule. Draw two of these resonance structures below. 4) The compound acetone is a common solvent. It has a chemical formula of CH,COCH, Acetone has three central atoms. (a) Draw the Lewis Dot structure for acetone. (b) Give the Ideal Bond Angle for all three central atoms. 5) Four covalent molecules are drawn below. :o: H. H-CH H H (1) (2) (3) (4) a) Define each of these molecules as polar or non-polar. (1) (2) (3) b) Describe the type of intermolecular force that each molecule would use: (1) (2) (3) (4)arrow_forwardIn the Lewis structures listed here, M and X represent various elements in the third period of the periodic table. Write the formula of each compound using the chemical symbols of each element: (a) (b) (c) (d)arrow_forward
- Which of the following Lewis dot structures is a valid Lewis structure? H +YF H H-P None of these : Si= CI are H- H. plausible/valid. H. :F: Harrow_forwardUnshared, or lone, electron pairs play an important role in determining the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds. Thus, it is important to know which atoms carry unshared pairs. Use the structural formulas below to determine the number of unshared pairs at each designated atom. (Be sure your answers are consistent with the formal charges on the formulas.) The number of unshared pairs at atom a is со b The number of unshared pairs at atom b is H3C CH3 The number of unshared pairs at atom c is The number of unshared pairs at atom a is b H3C- The number of unshared pairs at atom b is CCH2 The number of unshared pairs at atom c isarrow_forwardDraw Lewis structures of the four molecules and/or ions with the formulas given below and figure out which two of these are isoelectronic with each another. Species which are isoelectronic have the same number of atoms, the same total number of electrons, the same number of valence electrons, and the same valence electron structure (single and multiple bonds and lone pairs in same places), but need not have the same distribution of formal charges on atoms.CN- and Cl2 and F2 and N2 a) CN- and N2 are isoelectronic.b) F2 and Cl2 are isoelectronic.c) N2 and Cl2 are isoelectronic.d) CN- and Cl2 are isoelectronic.e) N2 and F2 are isoelectronic.arrow_forward
