Chapter 5, Problem 1Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for top-loading balance to be a poor choice to weigh 75 mg of the reagent should be explained.

Concept introduction:

Balances and scales are used in the laboratory to compare mass of two sets of objects or determine mass of an object or set of objects. Most common types of balances utilized in the laboratory are spring balances and top-loading.

Explanation of Solution

A top-loading balance is the most common type of weight measurement scales used in the laboratory and comes with a variety of shapes, sizes, and levels of complexity. But the top-loading is only accurate to ± 10 mg. Therefore for 75 mg of the reagent, the weight measured by the top-loading is 75±10 mg. The weight calculated by the top-loading causes very high relative uncertainty not suitable for the conscientious lab work. Lab work requires more accuracy so it is not a good choice.
