Cushing’s disease is characterized by muscular weakness due to adrenal or pituitary dysfunction. To provide effective treatment, it is important to detect childhood Cushing’s disease as early as possible. Age at onset of symptoms and age at diagnosis (months) for 15 children suffering from the disease were given in the article “Treatment of Cushing’s Disease in Childhood and Adolescence by Transphenoidal Microadenomectomy” (New Engl. J. of Med., 1984: 889). Here are the values of the differences between age at onset of symptoms and age at diagnosis
-24 | -12 | -55 | -15 | -30 | -60 | -14 -21 |
-48 | -12 | -25 | -53 | -61 | -69 | -80 |
a. Does the accompanying normal probability plot cast strong doubt on the approximate normality of the population distribution of differences?
b. Calculate a lower 95% confidence bound for the population mean difference, and interpret the resulting bound.
c. Suppose the (age at diagnosis) – (age at onset) differences had been calculated. What would be a 95% upper confidence bound for the corresponding population mean difference?

- Neutropenia. Neutropenia is an abnormally low number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood. Chemotherapy often reduces the number of neutrophils to a level that makes patients susceptible to fever and infections. G. Bucaneve et al. published a study of such cancer patients in the paper “Levofloxacin to Prevent Bacterial Infection in Patients With Cancer and Neutropenia” (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 353, No. 10, pp. 977–987). For the study, 375 patients were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of levofloxacin, and 363 were given placebo. In the group receiving levofloxacin, fever was present in 243 patients for the duration of neutropenia, whereas fever was experienced by 308 patients in the placebo group. a. At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that levofloxacin is effective in reducing the occurrence of fever in such patients? b. For this problem we want to know, is there sufficient sample evidence to conclude, at the 0.05 significance level, that the proportion of severe injuries is higher for children not wearing seat belts? - Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is a measure of the rate that water crosses the skin through diffusion and evaporation. In general, damaged skin has a higher TEWL than nondamaged skin. A report submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Therapeutic Equivalence of Topical Products, A. Bunge, B. N'Dri-Stempfer, et al., 2007) described an experiment in which the outer layer of skin on a small area of the foream was partially removed in order to measure the concentration of a certain drug. TEWL (in g/m? per hour) was measured both before and after skin removal. The results for 10 individuals were as follows. Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine, meaning that when nicotine is absorbed by the body, cotinine is produced. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that nonsmokers exposed to tobacco smoke have a higher mean cotinine level than nonsmokers not exposed to tobacco smoke. Based on your hypothesis tests and confidence intervals, what do you conclude about the effects of second hand smoke? Why?arrow_forwardBreastmilk and Antioxidants. There is convincing evidence that breastmilk containing antioxidants is important in the prevention of diseases in infants. Researchers A. Xavier et al. studied the effects of storing breastmilk on antioxidant levels in the article “Total Antioxidant Concentrations of Breastmilk—An Eye-Opener to the Negligent” (Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition, Vol. 29, No. 6, pp. 605–611). Samples of breastmilk were taken from women and divided into fresh samples that were immediately tested and the remaining samples that were stored in the refrigerator and tested after 48 hours. A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether, on average, stored breastmilk has a lower total antioxidant capacity. a. identify the variable. b. identify the two populations. c. identify the pairs. d. identify the paired-difference variable. e. determine the null and alternative hypotheses. f. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forward

- 4. Captopril is a drug designed to lower systolic blood pressure. When subjects were treated with this drug, their systolic blood pressure readings (in mm Hg) were measured before and after the drug was taken. Results are given in the accompanying table (based on data from “Essential Hypertension: Effect of an Oral Inhibitor of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme”, by MacGregor et al., BMJ, Vol. 2). Using a 0.01 significance level, is there sufficient evidence to support the claim that captopril has an effect on systolic blood pressure? Explain why statistical methods from Z-interval, Z-test, T-interval or T-test –cannot be used for this problem. Then, use the sign test to conduct the required test in R studio. Data on low-birthweight babies were collected over a 2-year period by 14 participating centers of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network. Results were reported by J. Lemons et al. in the on-line paper “Very Low Birth Weight Outcomes of the National Institute of ChildHealth and Human Development Neonatal Research Network” (Pediatrics, Vol. 107, No. 1, p. e1). For the 1084 surviving babies whose birth weights were 751– 1000 grams, the average length of stay in the hospital was 86 days, although one center had an average of 66 days and another had an average of 108 days. a. Can the mean lengths of stay be considered population means? Explain your answer.b. Assuming that the population standard deviation is 12 days, determine the z-score for a baby’s length of stay of 86 days at the center where the mean was 66 days.c. Public health studies have examined “low-battery anxiety” and acute anxiety called nomophobia that results when a smartphone user’s phone battery charge runs low and then dies (Wall Street Journal, https://www.wsj.com/articles/your-phone-is-almost-out-of-battery-remain-calm-call-a-doctor-1525449283). Battery life between charges for the Samsung Galaxy S9 averages 31 hours when the primary use is talk time and 10 hours when the primary use is Internet applications. Because the mean hours for talk time usage is greater than the mean hours for Internet usage, the question was raised as to whether the variance in hours of usage is also greater when the primary use is talk time.
