Successful teamwork and collaboration directly affects the efficacy of interdisciplinary communication. When effective communication is achieved within the healthcare team, this increases the amount of positive patient outcomes. Nurses and physicians must cooperate in order to attain a synergetic relationship. Their roles are integral to creating a safe environment for their patients. When all of these elements combine, the quality of care improves and collegial relationships are strengthened.

The two words most often used, ”cooperative and collaboration,” can easily be both applicable to the United States of America and other countries today, and are still often used to describe contract negotiations for the United States of America as well as other countries. (Barnardin & Russell, 2013).

Interprofessional collaboration is an important component in any health care. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics, Individuals shall uphold the dignity and autonomy of the professions, maintain collaborative and harmonious interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships, and accept the professions’ self-imposed standards (ASHA, 2016). With this in mind, it is our duty as future speech-language pathologist (SLPs) to adhere to this principle. Clinicians should utilize every resource available to assist his/her client. This even includes if the client needs a referral to a different specialist.

Collaboration involves negotiation and consensus seeking (Blais & Hayes, 2016). As the assistant director of nursing, I am a member of the Quality Improvement committee. Our purpose is to meet on a monthly basis to review feedbacks from patients regarding their home health aides. We need to know if the patient needs are being met, if they are being treated with respect and what improvements can be made to keep quality aides in order to ensure quality care of patients. Providing good care for home health patients with chronic conditions needs to be organized and coordinated (Barr & Ross, 2007).

Reflecting on the social change agents in action videos, the one I found particularly inspiring the “Power of Collaboration" by Marrian Kunth. This because Kunth a very brave woman succeeds to connect with other people’s power and passion. She proves that when collaboration exists between different people from different places, it is easier for them to connect to each other and work together to make a common change.

In week 4 I learned about the responsibility of Medical Assistance. They are hired within primary care to assist providers. It gave a scenario of what I could possible experience within the workplace. I learned that it is important to know each person scope of practice as well as it is Important that they also know their scope of practice. It is also important that employee knows the facility policy and wear the policy books are keep.

At USD, I am part of the Collaborate LLC. One of the benefits of this community is the opportunity to sit in on a class called ‘Civic Engagement in the US and South Africa’. Both this class and my own LLC class are focused on the concept of collaboration. This central theme was evident in the topics being taught, as well as the teaching style. The instructor fostered a very personal, yet difficult conversation with the students by asking follow up questions. He encouraged students to expand on their answers and often these answers lead to additional questions that the student continued to discuss.
