In my spring 2017 semester Kean awarded me the Freshman Trustee Scholarship for exceptional high school scholastic achievements, such as acquiring a 3.71 unweighted GPA and scoring 27 on the ACT. Whilst having such strong potential for collegiate success, there is a significant demonstrated financial gap in my parents' savings, where I must allocate my job earnings, and the cost for me to independently pursue a college education. I have been a part of JROTC for the past four years of my high school career. During my time in the program, I gained more self-confidence and was able to venture out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to join numerous clubs and organizations throughout my high school career. The clubs include the Chess Club for one year, the Environmental Club and AFJROTC Honor Guard team for two years, and Science Olympiad all my four years of high school. The organizations include the National Technical Honor Society for two years and National Honor Society for two years as well and voted Vice President.

Growing up in poverty meant always being in a pinch for money. This led me to my decision of seeking a job within the first month of my freshman year in high school. Thankfully, this decision led me to the precious self-taught skill of time management. I was able to build my skills until my sophomore year. I tried to take on more shifts at work than I could handle, in aspiration of saving up for a car, and consequently my grades began to slip. I acquired my first C in my favorite class: Chemistry. Being an aspiring student in the medical field, and a student who prides themselves on their grades, I was devastated. As a result, I soon reached the epiphany that one has to have priorities in life; I chose mine to be education. FFA has been very big part of my agricultural experiences and has opened many doors for me. It has taught me premier leadership as I have moved up in the FFA chapter. Also it has helped me become more outgoing than shy. By joining FFA and becoming more outgoing I have become more connected to other people in the ag field that I meet from FFA community events, FFA organization events, and customers shopping at Orscheln Farm and Home. Many thoughts motivate me to apply to the Honors Program at CSU, Chico. When I look back on the eighteen years of my life, I realized how much I’ve grown as a person. All throughout elementary school and 6th grade, my school would put me in a reading group because I had problems with comprehension. To clarify, I was that kid terrified of reading in front of the class because I knew my peers would laugh at my struggles. For this reason, I grew up believing that I would never be smart compared to the rest of my classmates. On a lighter note, when I started my freshman year of high school, I realized that I had the work ethic and dedication to be the intellectual I wanted to be. When I finished the year with a 4.0 GPA, it was the first time I felt like I was smart like everyone else.

I grew up in a world of little things. I appreciated the details in my daily life - the way my mothers voice changed as she read to me, the innumerable times my father checked his pockets before leaving for work. I liked the comfort of cramped library corners and well explored territory and small state schools. Growing up in Asheville, I considered myself wordly enough- I couldn’t imagine anything bigger than the mountains and stories ever-present around town.

When it comes to deciding on what colleges I'm going to apply to, I am very decisive. However, I know for a fact that applying to Hofstra isn’t even questionable.

If you were to slowly pour a handful of table salt into an entirely full glass of water, it would not overflow. Actually, the water level would decrease. The world of Chemistry is full of amazing science like this, which is why I am pursuing a degree in Chemistry at Fresno State. I plan on continuing my education after I graduate and earn a masters followed by working in the chemical engineering field. This goal could definitely be hindered by the fact that there are few chemistry scholarships at Fresno State. Scholarships like this will help my parents pay for my education, ultimately allowing me to reach my career goals while remaining debt free. I was awarded this grant last year and it contributed a large portion of my tuition and also allowed me to join one of Fresno State’s “Discovere” program. Discovere courses are general education classes in which tablets are used to collaborate with other students as we work together on class projects.

Maya Angelou once said “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style”. I believe that some people are complacent with mediocrity and therefore do not try to excel to their highest potential. As for me, furthering my future by attending college will help rise above the horizon of being average. I want to put my willing, intellectual, open mindedness, and so much more to good use.

Stating all the reasons as to why I am interested in the summer program seems almost impossible. I recently heard about this incredible opportunity from a peer who shares some common career interests. As soon as she mentioned the procedure on how to apply, I was ecstatic to start meeting all the necessary requirements. Being blessed with the news of being accepted into the Junior Volunteer Program will truly open many doors for me.
