Reflective Account For Primary Teaching

I am drawn to primary teaching from my own experiences as a pupil. Throughout my education I have been inspired, guided and challenged on a daily basis. It is this role model I now aspire to become by preparing pupils for all areas of life in a positive, creative and engaging style.

I am currently studying for a PGCE with one of the largest providers of teacher training in Essex. This intensive course is delivering up to date training in all areas of primary education and has become the basis of my teaching practice. I now have an understanding of the key policies surrounding education and how to deliver inclusive learning that is accessible to all. By taking on the responsibility of a whole class I have been able to apply theory to classroom situations in both KS1 and KS2. Mentors have encouraged a reflective dialogue in which I am able to formulate targets to aid self-development. I have also had the opportunity to see a significant amount of quality teaching in both placements. I am able to identify the key elements of an outstanding primary educator and I working on bringing these core principals into my own practice. During both placements, I have learnt the importance of successful planning. Given the opportunity to plan across all areas and across different time frames, I have been using assessment strategies to make sure planning is differentiated to suit the needs of the class. I have learnt an extensive amount during the first term and have enjoyed being part of the ever-growing community that is central to its success. I have found the school, to be an inspiring learning environment where clear expectations enable each pupil to thrive. I feel enthused by the schemes of work that are used at Blenheim. Each theme is specifically planned around the pupil’s needs and this personalisation is something in which I can see myself being a part of. I also have an interest in Maths No Problem! and how Singapore maths is developing mathematical understanding across the world. It is very rare to find an environment that is as welcoming and supportive as Blenheim Primary School. I am looking for this vital support during my NQT year and I know that the provision for SEN, EAL, inclusion and nurturing would ensure I could offer an outstanding education for all.

Prior to teacher training, I studied a degree in acting and spent some time within the industry. I believe that my degree, where imagination and creativity were at the heart, lends itself perfectly to primary teaching. I am very passionate about the use of drama within the primary classroom and I will be exploring the use of process drama within English as part of my research
