What is rhetoric? Rhetoric is “the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people" (“Rhetoric”). The three rhetorical strategies are: ethos- appeal to credibility, logos- appeal to logic, and pathos, appeal to emotion. These strategies are used throughout history, in Theodore Roosevelt’s Duties of American Citizenship speech, Martin Luther King Jr.’s, I have a dream speech and even into modern society in President George W. Bush’s 9/11 address to the nation. The key to knowing if a speech is effective or not, is by looking at its intended audience. This can be seen throughout the film, but is most effective when Mike is given a ride from the stranger that was playing basketball with him. The appeal to emotion starts when the narrator says “Mike was riding in the shadow of death” (“Boys Beware”). This completely changes the scene from mike and the stranger playing a fun game of basketball to Mike dying because he got into the car. This quote appeals to both teenagers and parents, as teens don’t want to die, and parents don’t want their children to die either. Additionally , the man that starts to play basketball with Mike was very nice and well dressed, but in a drastic change of events, turns around and later kills Mike. This is another great example of the rhetorical strategy of pathos as teenagers don’t know who they can trust anymore. Finally, the narrator ends the scene “Sometime that evening Mike Merrock traded his life for a newspaper headline” (“Boys Beware”). This appeal to emotion hits home to parents especially. Not only did their son die, but everyone who reads the newspaper will know that their child died and could therefor assume it was the fault of the parent not caring for their child.
