Question
Chapter 1, Problem 41EQ
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The formal charge on S and O atoms of benzenesulfonic acid is to be calculated.
Concept Introduction:
Some organic
To calculate the formal charge on an atom in any given structure it is necessary to distinguish between the electrons that make up an atom’s octet and the electrons that formally “belong” to an atom. In any given Lewis structure all electrons associated with an atom either as an unshared pair or shared pair are part of that atom’s octet.

Complete the general acid reaction for the four acid
halies (HX). Draw and upload the Lewis structures
of the reactants and products for each reaction.
HF + H₂O
HCI + H₂O →

Each of these reactions should include: lone pairs of
electrons, partial charges, and mechanistic arrows
to show the movement of electrons.
Four major contributing resonance structures are possible for the given cation, which is the intermediate o complex of an
electrophilic aromatic substitution involving phenol and bromine. Two structures are given but are incomplete. Complete the
given structures by adding nonbonding electrons and formal charges. Draw the remaining structures (in any order), including
nonbonding electrons and formal charges.

complete a Carvone Lewis structure that displays all valence electrons, all atoms and all the formal charges, if any. Use only a single dash for each pair of bonding electrons and a pair of dots for all nonbonding pairs of electrons.
Identify and label all functional groups (alcohols, amines, amides, carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes, aromatic rings, aromatic amines, etc) on the Lewis Structure. You do not have to circle alkanes. (Must be included in the preliminary submission and in the PowerPoint.)
