Work Problem P18-33A using the FIFO method. The Mixing Department beginning work in process of 300 units is 40% complete as to both direct materials and conversion costs. Round equivalent unit of production costs to four decimal places. Round all other costs to the nearest whole dollar.
Roan Paper Co. produces the paper used by wallpaper manufacturers. Roan’s four-stage process includes mixing, cooking, rolling, and cutting. On March 1, the Mixing Department had 300 rolls of paper in process. During March, the Mixing Department completed the mixing process for those 300 rolls and also started and completed the mixing process for an additional 4,200 rolls of paper The department started but did not finish the mixing process for an additional 500 rolls, which were 20% complete with respect to both direct materials and conversion work at the end of March. Direct materials and conversion costs are incurred evenly throughout the mixing process. The Mixing Department compiled the following data for March:
Requirements
- 1. Prepare a production cost report for the Mixing Department for March. The company uses the weighted-average method.
- 2. Journalize all transactions affecting the company’s mixing process during March. Assume labor costs are accrued and not yet paid.

- Chavez Concrete Inc. has two production departments. Blending had 1,000 units in process at the beginning of the period, two-fifths complete. During the period 7,800 units were received from Mixing, 8,200 units were transferred to the finished goods storeroom, and 600 units were in process at the end of the period, 1/3 complete. The cost of the beginning work in process was: The costs during the month were: 1. Using the data in E5-15, prepare a cost of production summary for the month ended January 31, 2016. 2. Prepare a journal entry to transfer the cost of the completed units from Blending to the finished goods storeroom.arrow_forwardArdt-Barger has a beginning work in process inventory of 5.500 units and transferred in 25,000 units before ending the month with 3.000 u flits that were 100% complete with regard to materials and 80% complete with regard to conversion costs. The cost per unit of material is $5.45, and the cost per unit for conversion is $6.20 per unit, Using the weighted-average method, prepare the companys process cost summary for the month.arrow_forwardLarkin Company produces leather strips for western belts using three processes: cutting, design and coloring, and punching. The weighted average method is used for all three departments. The following information pertains to the Design and Coloring Department for the month of June: a. There was no beginning work in process. b. There were 400,000 units transferred in from the Cutting Department. c. Ending work in process, June 30: 50,000 strips, 80 percent complete with respect to conversion costs. d. Units completed and transferred out: 330,000 strips. The following costs were added during the month: a. Direct materials are added at the beginning of the process. b. Inspection takes place at the end of the process. All spoilage is considered normal. Required: 1. Calculate equivalent units of production for transferred-in materials, direct materials added, and conversion costs. 2. Calculate unit costs for the three categories of Requirement 1. 3. What is the total cost of units transferred out? What is the cost of ending work-in-process inventory? How is the cost of spoilage treated? 4. Assume that all spoilage is considered abnormal. Now, how is spoilage treated? Give the journal entry to account for the cost of the spoiled units. Some companies view all spoilage as abnormal. Explain why. 5. Assume that 80 percent of the units spoiled are abnormal and 20 percent are normal spoilage. Show the spoilage treatment for this scenario.arrow_forward
- Cozy, Inc., manufactures small and large blankets. It estimates $350,000 in overhead during the manufacturing of 75,000 small blankets and 25,000 large blankets. What is the predetermined overhead rate if a small blanket takes 1 machine hour and a large blanket takes 2 machine hours?arrow_forwardMazomanie Farm completed 20,000 units during the quarter and has 2,500 units still in process. The units are 100% complete with regard to materials and 55% complete with regard to conversion costs. What are the equivalent units for materials and conversion?arrow_forwardFordman Company has a product that passes through two processes: Grinding and Polishing. During December, the Grinding Department transferred 20,000 units to the Polishing Department. The cost of the units transferred into the second department was 40,000. Direct materials are added uniformly in the second process. Units are measured the same way in both departments. The second department (Polishing) had the following physical flow schedule for December: Costs in beginning work in process for the Polishing Department were direct materials, 5,000; conversion costs, 6,000; and transferred in, 8,000. Costs added during the month: direct materials, 32,000; conversion costs, 50,000; and transferred in, 40,000. Required: 1. Assuming the use of the weighted average method, prepare a schedule of equivalent units. 2. Compute the unit cost for the month.arrow_forward
- Eyring Manufacturing produces a component used in its production of washing machines. The time to set up and produce a batch of the components is two days. The average daily usage is 800 components, and the maximum daily usage is 875 components. Required: Compute the reorder point assuming that safety stock is carried by Eyring Manufacturing. How much safety stock is carried by Eyring?arrow_forwardNarwhal Swimwear has a beginning work in process inventory of 13,500 units and transferred in 130,000 units before ending the month with 14,000 units that were 100% complete with regard to materials and 30% complete with regard to conversion costs. The cost per unit of material is $5.80 and the cost per unit for conversion is $8.20 per unit. Using the weighted-average method, what is the amount of material and conversion costs assigned to the department for the month?arrow_forwardAlgers Company produces dry fertilizer. At the beginning of the year, Algers had the following standard cost sheet: Algers computes its overhead rates using practical volume, which is 54,000 units. The actual results for the year are as follows: a. Units produced: 53,000 b. Direct materials purchased: 274,000 pounds at 2.50 per pound c. Direct materials used: 270,300 pounds d. Direct labor: 40,100 hours at 17.95 per hour e. Fixed overhead: 161,700 f. Variable overhead: 122,000 Required: 1. Compute price and usage variances for direct materials. 2. Compute the direct labor rate and labor efficiency variances. 3. Compute the fixed overhead spending and volume variances. Interpret the volume variance. 4. Compute the variable overhead spending and efficiency variances. 5. Prepare journal entries for the following: a. The purchase of direct materials b. The issuance of direct materials to production (Work in Process) c. The addition of direct labor to Work in Process d. The addition of overhead to Work in Process e. The incurrence of actual overhead costs f. Closing out of variances to Cost of Goods Soldarrow_forward
