Internet fashion retail is a highly competitive market, the trends in the industry and company’s success relies on customer’s needs, which change constantly. “Competitive advantage is the delivering of superior value to customers and, in doing so, earning an above average return for the company and its stakeholders” (McGee, Thomas & Wilson, 2005, p.207). In order for ASOS to stay on top of its competitors, the trends in the industry have to be monitored, so that further they can be strategically translated in developing new products, to gain customer satisfaction.
That includes a lot of social campaigns. For example Waitrose is one of the companies with the highest number of people who are their fans in Facebook. The supermarket launched new social media campaign including its first ever Facebook app. This happened around Christmas and it gave the chance to all their online friends `to claim prizes ranging from mince pies to a year's worth of Waitrose shopping for one lucky winner`. http://www.thedrum.co.uk/news/2010/11/19/16727-waitrose-hopes-for-festive-boost-with-social-media-campaign/ accessed 20/03/2011

This report will be about my chosen business Tesco. I will talk about the recruiting and selection process of Tesco. I chose Tesco because Tesco is one of the biggest supermarkets and they exist long time ago and they have been successful. Tesco has more than 250 employees so it is counted as a large business. Tesco was found in 1919 by Jack Cohen. Tesco on his first day made profit £1 from sales £4. Tesco’s brand appeared in 1924. Tesco has also bank, insurance company and petrol stations. Tesco have 476 000 employees so it is large business because is also international business. Tesco is a PLC company which means they are public limited company (they can sell shares to the public) and they have unlimited liabilities.

Topshop was founded in 1964 in Sheffield within the ladies fashion store chain Peter Robinson Ltd. The first official stand alone store was opened in 1974, followed by Topman being introduced in 1978 exclusively for male customers. Topshop has over 300 stores in the UK and over 100 stores internationally and has a flagship store in both London andn New York. It is part of the Arcadia Group which also owns Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Miss Selfridge.
The internet helps Tesco to be efficient as they can collect orders in advance and prepare for them. They are able to continue business in-store and serve others at home. With a couple of extra staff (to be the ‘pickers’ and drivers to deliver) Tesco are able to maximise efficiency by adding extra orders from customers that aren’t in-store and this reduces the amount of people in the store which may block shelves if it gets too crowded. Time and money is
Depending on the time of day you go into Topshop depends on the types of people you would see in there. In the week in the morning the shop is normally quite empty, the only people you would see in there are young women who are probably unemployed or students. These people probably will not buy much but will stay in the store for a while. If you go in to Topshop at lunch time it will be busier and will have young professionals who are just popping in on their lunch break. These people probably already know what they are going to buy and so will just buy it then leave. At weekends the store is a lot busier, it is full of all sorts of people who will probably all spend quite a while in the shop trying things on and then buying.
