Evaluate the skills and techniques required to successfully perform in two different land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
Rock climbing and hiking requires particular skills and knowledge and techniques to be performed successfully and with pleasure rather than discomfort. What are the main reasons for these skills and techniques, why they are good and what could happen if you would not have them.
The advantages of effective planning and preparation is that you will be ready for most of the challenges you possible can face during the activities. It is not possible to prepare for everything, but you need to decrease the chances of getting in trouble as much as you can. Lack of preparation can result in poor performance and

Without this ability participants can make wrong decisions and injure themselves by thinking that they are capable of doing something when they are not. To increase awareness of dynamic risk assessing skills, it is important to understand what the injuries can lead to and why safety is important. When participants have knowledge of consequences they are less likely to misbehave and act unsafely.
Navigational skills are mainly a major advantage for hiking activity as it would certainly help to complete the expedition without getting lost. In other words it is almost impossible to complete specific route without navigational skills like map reading, bearings, using route card and taking grid references. If you are not capable of navigating with map, compass and route card it is likely that expedition will result a failure, so before a hike you have to ensure that you are capable of navigating or have someone to guide you through expedition.
Navigational techniques such as hand railing, pacing and aiming of are designed for hiking activity mainly to assist and aid navigation. The advantage of using them is that it can make hiking easier and more comfortable to navigate, but it cannot be a replacement for navigational skills. To learn these techniques a simple practise can be done and its effectiveness observed by experienced hiker.
Rock climbing techniques could be very
In order to continue climbing Everest, many aspects of climbing need to be improved before more people endanger their lives to try and reach the roof of the world. The guides have some areas that need the most reform. During the ascension of Everest the guides made a plethora mistakes that seemed insignificant but only aided in disaster. The guides first mistake is allowing “any bloody idiot [with enough determination] up” Everest (Krakauer 153). By allowing “any bloody idiot” with no climbing experience to try and climb the most challenging mountain in the world, the guides are almost inviting trouble. Having inexperienced climbers decreases the trust a climbing team has in one another, causing an individual approach to climbing the mountain and more reliance on the guides. While this approach appears fine, this fault is seen in addition to another in Scott Fischer’s expedition Mountain Madness. Due to the carefree manner in which the expedition was run, “clients [moved] up and down the mountain independently during the acclimation period, [Fischer] had to make a number of hurried, unplanned excursions between Base Camp and the upper camps when several clients experienced problems and needed to be escorted down,” (154). Two problems present in the Mountain Madness expedition were seen before the summit push: the allowance of inexperienced climbers and an unplanned climbing regime. A third problem that aided disaster was the difference in opinion in regards to the responsibilities of a guide on Everest. One guide “went down alone many hours ahead of the clients” and went “without supplemental oxygen” (318). These three major issues: allowing anyone up the mountain, not having a plan to climb Everest and differences in opinion. All contributed to the disaster on Everest in
knowing what terrain is coming up next. You could speed away and be OK or you
Assess strategies and methods used to minimise the harm to children, young people and their families where abuse is confirmed (M3). Justify responses where child maltreatment or abuse id suspected or confirmed, referring to current legislation and policies (D2)
The second step is to look to the clouds, which will help determine if you will have smooth sailing or storms. The third step is to observe wildlife and seamarks, which will notify how close land is. Another step, which is normally considered the most difficult, would be to memorize constellations and stars, mapping them out in your mind. A true navigator will always know where they are due to the stars and their placement. Discovery isn’t always about traveling to new islands, or conquering new worlds.
As for Columbus, during his time of travel, celestial navigation (navigation by stars) was being established and unfortunately, he was not able to use such navigation for his travels in its place he used dead reckoning. To use dead reckoning, the course one would travel was measured by a compass and the distance was measured by time, possibly keeping track by the sun or an astrolabe, but most of all it was determined by the speed of the ship. The navigator would find his ships position by measuring his own course and the distance they have sailed from a remembered point possibly landmark or object. With this technique the navigator would measure his course and his distance from it to from another point of the map and mark his new point. It
Sometimes trails will be so long that hikers will have to camp out for a day or two just too even get through half of it but once they set out on the trip the only thing that could possibly stop them is animals, weather and no more food. In Yosemite national park hikers will go about 5 miles or at the most 9 and then turn back but the more experienced hikers will just camp out and continue early in the morning. Fishermen like to travel around lakes to scout probable spots to fish and some likes can go as far as 10 miles like the great lakes they go from anywhere near 50 to almost if not a hundred miles. Traveling around a lake is hard but they only need to select a few areas and their
Is it their desire to succeed, or their stubbornness to resist failing? While these qualities do play a vital role in extreme adventuring, experience is the most integral character to be successful as an explorer. Adam Shoalts could not have succeeding in trekking across the Again River if he was not an experienced outdoorsman. He knew exactly what to do in any scenario the environment threw his way: from a polar bear attack, to canoeing over the edge of a waterfall. Shoalts’ understanding of what to do and what not to do was what allowed him to achieve his goals in canoeing down the Again River. In contrast, Shriya Shah-Klorfine was not an experienced explorer. She did not have a physically fit body, did not have proper training in climbing, and did not have a great understanding of what to expect on her trek. She was a novice explorer who overestimated her abilities because she simply did not have the experience needed. As Guy Cotter stated, “Amazing determination, but absolutely stupid” (“Mount Everest”, 2016). The situation she put herself in was the reason for her unfortunate death. If Shriya Shah-Klorfine had more conditioning, more extensive training, and more climbing experience, she would have been successful in scaling Mount
I never thought I would rock climb blindfolded, yet last summer I climbed fifty feet of rock with a bandana over my eyes. This is not the first time I have done something so adventurous. I have always been determined, and this quality has led me to repeatedly push myself beyond my comfort zone. I have done out of the ordinary things from rock climbing to spelunking, things some people go their whole lives without doing. I have worked towards a single goal for years, hoping that my tenacity will lead to the attainment of that goal. My determination enables me to push myself to try new things, let my adventurous side shine, and labor long for something I desire.
Navigation in ancient times, centuries before such advances as radios, satellites and GPS, relied upon sight, sound and knowledge. The first journey’s upon the sea no doubt relied upon sight and used the costal shores to navigate. Remaining in sight of land to fish and journey short distances along the coast. Venturing farther from shore using unique or recognizable formations as landmarks, the position of the sun, clouds and other indicators of land. The Phoenicians
✓ A compass and a map, especially a topographic map of the area in which you’ll be hiking
GPS gives the distance without calculation and gives you idea of the weather condition. Quadrant is a down grade to the Gyroscopic Compass. Quadrant helps you find the north but can be effect but earth magnetic field. The Gyroscopic Compass is always pointing to the real northern star and dont use the earth magnetic field to find the northern star. Sunglass was more harder to to keep up with time you had to turn the glass every hour. The ditigal clock is hand free and you dont have to turn it every hour. Columbus had to use his own eye site to delect something but he could only see so far. Radar of would delected something miles away without having to keep watch 24/7 of ships surrounding. Columbus got off course often and had to correct himself but with Long Range Navigation Columbus could of found where his Ship was and got back on course. If Columbus had a Depth Sounder he would of be able to see under the water to make sure he didnt hit nothing and even could see the fish under the water for Columbus could catch them for
For example, It's very dangerous to go caving without the right materials. There are a lot of important materials that go with the sport of caving, because without those certain materials you can be in a lot of danger. In addition, When exploring caves you need a light because you need to be able to see where you are going. the source of light is important because the caves are dark the further you get in them. Furthermore, You need a helmet because of the ruggedness of the caves, also a bag filled with extra lights, batteries, ropes, first aid, also since the caves are cold and wet you will need water proof clothing and other stuff for when you going the
Foremost among the benefits is perhaps the sheer experience of getting outside of someone’s comfort zone and embarking on an adventurous journey which few men would have the courage to even think about. Nowadays people, especially the younger generation, are seeking exciting activities which may be dangerous, such as mountain climbing, and these difficult journeys seem to be a favorable option for adrenaline-junkies. Furthermore, it must be said that due to the severe living conditions of these locations, the natural
Expedition style climbing is when you bring a large slow moving party and make your way up the slopes in a series of camps. This was a common type of climbing in the early years with massive millitarys
There are many diverse climbing styles to choose from when it comes to ascending a mountain. The styles include bouldering, traditional, sport, and the most basic, hiking. Of those climbing styles, two stand out as complete opposites, bouldering and sport climbing. The sport of bouldering is like math and sport climbing is like music. Both of these climbing styles require great skill and practice just as math and music do.
