Chapter 1, Problem 1.57P

A furnace tor processing semiconductor materials isformed by a silicon carbide chamber that is zone-heatedon the top section and cooled on the lower section. Withthe elevator in the lowest position, a robot arm inserts thesilicon water on the mounting pins. In a production operation, the wafer is rapidly moved toward the hot zone toachieve the temperature-time history required tor theprocess recipe. In this position, the top and bottom surfaces of the wafer exchange radiation with the hot andcool zones, respectively, of the chamber. The zonetemperatures are T h = 1500 K and T c = 330 K , and theemissivity and thickness of the wafer are = 0.65 and d = 0.78 mm . respectively. With the ambient gas at T = 700 K , convection coefficients at the upper andlower surfaces of the wafer are 8 and 4 W/m 2 K , respectively. The silicon wafer has a density of 2700 kg/m 3 anda specific heat of 875 J/kg K .

(a) For an initial condition corresponding to a watertemperature of T w , i = 300 K and the position of thewater shown schematically, determine the corresponding lime rate of change of the wafer temperature. ( d T w / d t ) i .
(b) Determine the steady-slate temperature reachedby the wafer if it remains in this position. Howsignificant is convection heat transfer for thissituation? Sketch how you would expect thewafer temperature to vary as a function of vertical distance.

The operators have noticed that the performance of the reactor is somewhat different to thedesign specifications and suspect that the thermal cycling may be responsible. The seniorprocess engineer would like you to analyse two periods:- The period when the reactor is initially heated up and held at the operating temperature.- The period after the reactor is taken offline for maintenance and then heated up again. You should consider the effect of the tube expansion on the operating variables and theoverall effect on pressure drop and conversion. Compare these responses to the estimatedperformance according to the design basis. You may include any equations or diagrams that you consider necessary to support yourdiscussion. A numerical solution is not required.Hints: A general consideration of the design method for fixed bed reactors may revealrelationships between operating and performance variables.

The schematic below illustrates a tank formed from two zones, i.e. liquid and solid. The tank is heated from the left-side with a time-varying solar heat radiation g,ol =f(t) (Wim), while the right-side is kept at a low temperature T. The top surface of the tank is subjected to the ambient conditions, i.e. (hair & Tair ), while its bottom is thermally insulated. Conjugate heat transfer takes place between the two-physically different zones through the fluid-solid interface separating them, while fluid flow is induced due to buoyancy effects where the buoyancy force is approximated according to Boussinesq formulation Fiuoyaney=P0 Bg(T-To). Explain the following: 1- The assumptions required to simulate the below problem. 2- The conservation equations governing the transport phenomena in each zone. 3- The boundary conditions closing the mathematical model. 4- The discretized form of each conservation equation stated in (point 2) above. 5- The appropriate differencing scheme to be used for…
